How many miles can your car travel on a single tank of gas? How many miles do you think an ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid could drive on a single charge, and a single tank? It all depends on the vehicle's fuel economy, and tank size.

For some reason, most respondents of a 2016 Harris Poll believed the top-end range of a plug-in hybrid was a mere 261 miles, despite sky-high fuel economy.

The actual highest plug-in hybrid range, claimed by the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi, is an EPA-estimated 610 miles, up from 550 miles for the 2016 model.

The confusion may be from drivers mistaking plug-in hybrids for electric vehicles. Unlike a battery-electric vehicle (BEV), a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) still uses a gasoline engine to extend the vehicle's range far beyond the current capability of a battery alone.

"Plug-in hybrids are electric vehicles until you run down the battery," said Wade Jackson, marketing manager for Ford Fusion, "then they work exactly like a conventional hybrid. Fusion Energi – with a full battery and a full tank of gas – can go from San Diego, through Los Angeles and all the way up to San Francisco, and still have up to 110 miles of range remaining."
